Frequently Asked Questions
Will the number of panels on my roof be sufficient to significantly impact my power bill?
Usually, mobile and manufactured homes offer ample roof space to accommodate the necessary panels for powering your lifestyle. You can even achieve cost savings by covering just 50% of your total energy usage. A consultation will provide further insight into the potential savings awaiting you.
Is solar installation permitted by my park management?
In 1978, California introduced the Solar Rights Act to encourage widespread adoption of solar energy within the state. This legislation safeguards consumers’ rights to install and operate solar energy systems on their homes or businesses. Specifically, California Civil Code Sections 714 and 714.1, part of the Act, prohibit CC&Rs (Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions) such as those enforced by Homeowners’ Associations, from unreasonably restricting the use or installation of solar energy systems. However, our priority is to foster respectful and sustainable relationships within your community and with your park’s management. Therefore, we always engage in communication with management before installation to ascertain community-specific installation policies and guidelines.
Do mobile and manufactured home building codes differ from those of traditional homes?
Manufactured homes adhere to the Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standards, commonly known as the “HUD Code,” rather than local building codes. Each transportable section of a manufactured home displays a red certification label on its exterior. The HUD Code, maintained by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), encompasses standards for design, construction, durability, fire resistance, energy efficiency, transportability, and quality control within the manufactured home industry. Additionally, it establishes performance criteria for heating, air conditioning, plumbing, thermal, and electrical systems.
Are solar panels compatible with the dimensions of my roof?
Certainly, while your roof might be smaller compared to the average house, considering that the typical manufactured home is over 1,000 square feet in size, accommodating the required solar panels shouldn’t pose any issues.
Is it safe to install solar panels on my roof?
The feasibility of installing solar panels on mobile homes hinges on adherence to local building codes and the structural integrity of the home. Ensuring a safe roof for solar involves meticulous examination by solar companies to confirm compliance with building codes. This includes assessing the strength of the roof joists, considering factors such as dimensions, spacing, and the type of wood used. Additionally, they inspect for any damage, rot, mold, or other indicators of compromised joists.
What are alternative strategies for conserving energy that could benefit my home?
Based on research by the U.S. Department of Energy, the most effective efficiency measures for mobile homes are:
- Sealing furnace ducts and addressing air leaks
- Arranging for a furnace tune-up
- Enhancing insulation beneath the manufactured home
- Fitting interior storm windows
- Upgrading attic insulation
What level of energy efficiency do mobile and manufactured homes typically achieve?
Manufactured homes frequently exhibit significant energy inefficiency, resulting in considerable energy wastage. Implementing a few upgrades can substantially reduce your energy consumption, offering a cost-effective approach for those interested in transitioning to solar power.
